Pulveroboletus ravenelii (Berk. & Curt.) Murr. Cap 2-10cm across, obtuse to convex, becoming flatter with an incurved margin; bright sulphur yellow, becoming orange-red to brownish red on the disc; dry and powdery becoming felty-hairy. Tubes 5-8mm deep, adnate; lemon yellow to olive-tinted, bruising greenish blue to brown or black. Pores 2-3 per mm, smooth, round to angular; bright yellow bruising greenish-blue. Stem 40-150 x 4-15mm, sometimes irregular or tapering toward the top; at first covered with yellow powder, then brilliant yellow with yellowish or white strands around the base; dry to moist; universal veil leaves a faint ring on the stem. Flesh white to yellow bruising pale blue then dull brown or yellowish. Odor very faint. Taste rather sour. Spores ellipsoid, smooth, 8-10.5 x 4-5µ. Deposit smoky olive. Habitat singly or scattered in pine and hardwood forests. Found in eastern North America, west to Michigan and Texas, reported in California. Season July-September. Edible with caution. |
