Pholiota decorata (Murr.) Smith & Hesler Cap 3-8cm across, flatly convex with a hairy fringed margin, becoming flatter with an umbo and spreading margin; disc dark brownish fading to fawn, the margin pale brown to light fawn or dark cream; slimy to sticky, with rows of concentric hairy scales which often disappear before maturity; smooth and appearing streaked with fine hairs beneath the gluten in age. Gills adnate to sinuate, close, moderately broad, edges even; white to creamy yellowish. Stem 40-90 x 3-l0mm, solid becoming hollow; pallid to pale greenish yellow with dingy pinkish brown flaky scales or patches on the lower portion, top silky; sub-bulbous base with brownish cortex. Flesh thick, watery to soft and pliant; white, becoming yellowish in age. Odor none or faintly fragrant. Taste mild. Spores oval to ellipsoid, smooth, tiny pore at apex, 6-7.5 x 3.5-4.5µ. Deposit cigar brown. Pleurocystidia thick- or thin-walled. Habitat singly or scattered on fallen conifer branches and debris. Found from the Pacific Northwest east to Idaho and Colorado, and in California. Season July-November. Not edible. |
