Cordyceps capitata (Holmsk. ex Fr.) Link Fruit body up to 10cm high with a round head; brown to olive-black; surface finely roughened; arising from a stout yellow stem, smooth or furrowed, which tapers upward. Asci about 15µ wide, cylindrical. Spores threadlike, breaking into cylindrical, smooth part-spores, 14-20 x 2-3µ. Habitat singly or in small groups parasitically on underground species of elaphomyces. Found widely distributed throughout North America and Europe. Season September-November. Not edible. |
