Aseroë rubra A stinkhorn from New Zealand. The whole fruit body is pink, arising from an oval white ‘egg’ with the glebal disk showing dark, sticky, spore mass, the ‘tentacles’ are strong reddish colour grouped in pairs, normally up to as much as 10cm in height. This is a very very rare fungus, only one record found outside greenhouses in the whole of the northern hemisphere. Found on mixed woodland litter on acid soil. It is native to New Zealand and Australia and other areas in the southern hemisphere. Presumably it was imported on garden plants that had been introduced from the southern hemisphere. I would like to thank Geoffrey Kibby for allowing me to use this photograph. |

One of several Starfish Mushrooms found growing in my yard in Charleston, SC... The mulch it is growing on is from a 40" diameter pine tree that was growing in my yard. The tree was cut down and mulched in early 2010.

I think this is one of these mushrooms. It was growing on the mulch of a ground pine stump in Georgia, USA, just out in our yard. Definitely not in a greenhouse. There's a whole bunch of them. Thankfully, they haven't gotten to the "stink" stage yet.

Michael Bangs (New Zealand) - 21 March 2009

Hi Roger
I brought your book back in the 1980s and found it great when i lived in the new forest. I now live in New Zealand and saw this unusual fungus and decided to look it up. I could not find it in your book but soon as i typed in Pink Tentacle mushroom your site came up first. I found the mushroom at Western Springs a park in the heart of Auckland. I thought it was a good idea to send the picture as the tentacles are linked together with a strand.
Thanks
Michael Bangs
