Tylopilus ballouii (Pk.) Singer Cap 5-12cm across, convex to flattened, often irregular in outline; bright fiery orange to reddish brown or cinnamon; dry, slightly roughened to subtomentose. Tubes white bruising brown. Pores cream to smoky brown where bruised. Stem 25-120 x 7-25mm, equal to swollen-clavate; pallid to pale yellow-orange, white at base; dry, smooth to subreticulate at apex. Flesh spongy; white, turning slightly brownish orange where eaten by insects. Odor pleasant. Taste mild. Spores ellipsoid, smooth, 8-10 X 4-5µ. Deposit vinaceous brown. Habitat under mixed deciduous trees, especially beech. In some years quite abundant. Found from New York down to North Carolina. Season July-September. Edible. |
