Tricholomopsis sulfureoides (Pk.) Singer Cap 3-7cm across, convex becoming flatter and sometimes with a broad umbo; yellow with some paler patches at times, drying pale reddish brown; finely hairy becoming scaly, with scales darkening in age. Gills slightly decurrent or notched, close, broad; similar color to cap with a fringed edge. Stem 30-70 x 3-7mm, off-center, curved, stuffed becoming hollow; yellowish drying pale reddish brown; minutely hairy below. Flesh pale yellow, unchanging. Spores ovoid, smooth, 5.5-6.5 x 4.5-5ì. Deposit white. Habitat singly or in groups on coniferous logs, particularly eastern hemlock. Found in northeastern North America, south to North Carolina and west to the Great Lakes; also found in the Pacific Northwest. Season July-October. Edibility not known -avoid. |
