Suillus caerulescens Smith & Thiers Cap 6-14cm across, convex becoming flat; dull reddish yellow, more yellow toward the margin; small, scaly patches at first, then smooth and slimy. Tubes adnate; yellow bruising pinky-brown. Pores irregularly angular; yellow. Stem 25-80 x 20-30mm, webbed at the top above the ring; yellow and smooth with some dots above, red-brown with minute hairs below the ring, base bruising blue when handled. Veil fibrous, pallid; leaving band-like ring on stalk. Flesh pale yellow, sometimes flushed with pink, bruises blue in stem. Odor mild or slightly sour. Taste mild or slightly sour. Spores ellipsoid, 8-11 x 3-5µ. Deposit dull cinnamon. Habitat gregarious in humus under mixed conifers, particularly Douglas fir. Common. Found in the Pacific Northwest and California. Season August-January. Edible. Comment The blue bruising of the stem may take a few minutes but is a distinctive feature. |
