Lyophyllum loricatum (Fr.) Kühn. syn. Tricholoma cartilagineum (Bull. ex Fr.) Gillet Knorpeliger Büschelritterling. Cap 5–12cm across, convex, later expanded and slightly depressed or umbonate, sepia to pale chestnut, cuticle cartilaginous. Stem 50–100 x 10–15mm, white to greyish-buff, apex white and floury, base somewhat rooting. Flesh white, firm. Taste sweet with a bitter aftertaste, smell slight or nutty. Gills white later straw-coloured. Spore print white. Spores globose, 6–7um in diameter. Habitat deciduous and mixed woodland. Season summer to autumn. Rare. Edible with caution. (Never eat any mushroom until you are certain it is edible as many are poisonous and some are deadly poisonous.) Distribution, America and Europe. Note some mycologists synonomise Lyophyllum decastes and Lyophyllum loricatum. |
