Lactarius vinaceorufescens Smith. Cap 4-10cm across, convex with an inrolled margin, then expanded and depressed at center; pale yellow-buff to cinnamon pink, with paler, watery zones or spots, becoming darker overall with age; smooth and sticky when wet. Gills adnate, crowded; vinaceous buff staining pinkish. Stem 40-60 x 10-20mm; same color as cap; smooth, with stiff, short hairs at base. Flesh white staining yellow, all parts exuding latex. Latex white turning bright yellow. Odor none. Taste (of latex) slightly peppery but more acrid after color change. Spores subglobose, 6.5-8(9) x 6-7µ; ornamentation of nodulose ridges and isolated warts, partially reticulate, up to 0.5-0.8µ. Deposit dull white to yellowish. Habitat gregarious under mixed conifers and hardwoods. Found widely distributed in northeastern North America, west to Wisconsin. Season August-October. Edibility not known- best avoided.
