Hypomyces hyalinus (Schw. ex Fr.) Tul. Fruit body a whitish to pink-tinged mold that produces reddish or amber perithecia. It forms a dense, thick covering on its amanita hosts, distorting them into thick, club-shaped forms that are unrecognizable. Spores spindle-shaped, strongly warted, transparent, unequally 2-celled; 13-22 x 4.5-6.5µ. Habitat on Amanita rubescens, Amanita flavorubescens, Amanita frostiana, and possibly Amanita bisporigera. Found in northeastern North America west to Colorado and south to North Carolina. Season June-October. Not edible. |
