Cuphophyllus niveus (Fr.) Bon. Syn. Hygrocybe nivea (Scop.) Fr. syn. Camarophyllus virgineus (Wulf. ex Fr.) Fr. (of some authors) syn. Hygrophorus virgineus (Fr.) Fr. Schneeweisser Saftling Hygrophore blanc de neige Snowy Waxcap. Cap 1–3cm across, convex becoming flattened and depressed, white becoming ivory or tinged ochraceous with age especially at centre, striate when moist. Stem 25–50 x 2–4mm, tapering towards the base, white. Flesh thick at centre of cap, whitish. Taste and smell not distinctive. Gills decurrent, widely spaced, whitish. Spore print white. Spores ellipsoid or pip-shaped, 7–9 x 4–5.5um in four-spored forms but 10–12´5–6m in two-spored forms. Habitat amongst short grass in pasture and open woodland. Season autumn. Common. Edible (Never eat any mushroom until you are certain it is edible as many are poisonous and some are deadly poisonous.) Found In Europe. Note Bon has now placed this fungus in Cuphophyllus. |
