Russula rhodopoda Zvára.
Cap 3-10cm across, convex; fleshy; blood red to deep garnet red, or even brownish red; very viscid and shiny as if lacquered; cuticle easily separable. Gills rather crowded, narrow; pale cream to yellowish. Stem 30-80 x 10-25mm, equal; white, flushed red or pink over most of lower half. Flesh white. Odor weak, fruity. Taste mild. Spores broadly ovoid, 7.5-9.5 x 6.7-7µ; warts up to 0.5µ. high, with partial to complete reticulum. Deposit pale ochre-yellow (D-E). Habitat under conifers. Found in the Pacific Northwest. Season September-October. Edibility not known.
