Russula polycystis Singer.
Cap 4-10cm across, soon flattened; pale creamy yellow, buff to ivory or straw; viscid when wet, surface often cracking into small areolate patches; cuticle thick and rubbery or elastic, peels almost to center. Gills close; pale cream-yellow. Stem 25-50 x 10-20mm; white to pale yellow; pruinose-scurfy surface. Flesh firm; white. Odor none. Taste slowly acrid. Spores subglobose, 6.5-7.5 x 5-6.5µ; warts 0.5-1µ, high, almost no connectives. Deposit cream (B-C). Habitat in mixed woods. Uncommon. Recorded from Tennessee, Virginia, and New York, but probably widespread. Season July-August. Not edible.
