Russula curtipes Møller & J. Schaeff. Cap 3-10cm across, soon flattened; often concentrically pigmented, red-brown to vinaceous red or purplish, center often paler cream; surface dull. Gills fairly close, broad; medium ochre. Stem 30-50 x 10-15mm, usually shorter than cap diameter; white. Flesh firm; white. Odor mild. Taste mild. Spores ellipsoid, 7-9.5 x 6-7.5µ; with low, blunt warts and a partial network. Deposit deep ochre (F-H). Habitat in beech woods. Found in New Jersey; possibly elsewhere but not recorded. Season July-August. Edible. (Never eat any mushroom until you are certain it is edible as many are poisonous and some are deadly poisonous) |
