Russula ballouii Pk. Cap 2-5cm across, broadly convex then flattened or slightly depressed in the center; yellow-ochre to tawny; surface dry and cracking into many minute mosaic-like patches. Gills adnate, close; pale cream. Stem 20-50 x 8- l0mm, equal; colored like cap; base with cracked surface. Flesh fragile; creamy white. Odor not distinctive. Taste mild. Spores ovoid, 8-10 x 7-8µ; warts up to 0.5µ high, partial reticulum. Deposit white (A). Habitat in mixed deciduous woods. Rather rare. Found widely distributed in eastern North America. Season August-September. Edibility not known, avoid. |
