Boletus rubripes Thiers Cap 9-16cm across, convex-flattened; pale buff to dull tawny brown, darker where handled; dry, dull, tomentose. Tubes up to 1.5cm deep; primrose yellow. Pores small, angular; bright yellow, blue where bruised. Stem 80-130 x 20-40mm, slightly clavate; yellow at apex, pinkish red to deep red at base; dry, smooth. Flesh firm, solid; yellow-buff, blue when cut. Odor unpleasant. Taste bitter. Spores spindle-shaped to ellipsoid, 12.5-17.6 x 4-5µ. Deposit olive-brown. Habitat in mixed woods, especially oak and pine. Found in western North America. Season August-December. Not edible.
