Boletus fraternus Pk. Cap 2-5cm across, convex, soon flattened; deep red then pinkish, often with a cracked surface showing yellow flesh beneath, dry, subtomentose to minutely scabrous. Tubes bright yellow. Pores small; yellow quickly bruising blue. Stem 20-50 x5-12mm, equal; colored as cap but with pallid base, color fading to brown rather quickly. Flesh soft, often buggy; pale yellow, soon blue when bruised. Odor pleasant. Taste pleasant. Spores fusiform, 12-15 x 6-8µ. Deposit olive-brown. Habitat often gregarious in grass in mixed woods or gardens. Found in eastern North America. Season July-September. Edible but poor quality.
