Amanita volvata (Pk.) Mar. Volvate Amanita, Cap 5-10cm across, convex to flat, margin with radial striations; white bruising reddish brown; smooth, surface often with numerous patches of thin veil remnants. Gills free, broad, crowded; white. Stem 50-100 x 10-15mm (2-4x'/2in), white; surface floccose-shaggy to powdery, also discoloring; base emerging from a thick, membranous, fleshy, cuplike volva; no ring is left on the stem. Flesh white. Odor not distinctive. Taste not distinctive. Spores elliptic, smooth, amyloid, 9-11 x 6-7µ. Deposit white. Habitat in open, often sandy soils in mixed woods and roadsides. Common. Found in eastern North America. Season July-October. Not edible - avoid all amanitas as many of them contain poisonous toxins.
