Cortinarius laniger Fr. subgenus Telamonia Cap 4-10cm across, domed, campanulate; heavy and thick-fleshed; ochreous cinnamon-colored; broken up with fibrils, only a touch hygrophanous. Gills adnexed; bright cinnamon. Stem 80-100 x 10-20mm, with a large, swollen clavate bulb; pallid cinnamon with creamy fibers and white veil remnants often forming a distinct thick central belt. Flesh creamy marbled with cinnamon patches. Odor said not to have an odor, but mine smelled distinctly of pelargonium (household geranium). Taste mild. Spores ellipsoid to pip-shaped, rough, 8.5-10.5 x 5.5-6.5µ, quotient 1.6. Deposit rusty brown. Habitat in conifer woods. Occasional. Found in northern North America and Europe. Season September-October. Not edible. Comment The bright, cinnamon colored gills are very distinct. |
