Cortinarius caninus (Fr.) Fr. subgenus Sericeocybe Cap 3-10cm across, convex, domed; at first buff with a hint of violet, then more rust- brown; dry, smooth. Gills adnexed; violet when young, then pallid rusty brown. Stem 60-120 x 8-18mm, clavate, swollen below; violet near the apex at first, then white with delicate bands or touches of brown veil. Flesh pallid, with violet near the stem apex. Odor slight. Taste mild. Spores subglobose to broadly pip-shaped, roughened, 7-8.1 x 5.7-6.8µ, quotient 1.2. Deposit rusty brown. Habitat in coniferous or broad-leaved woods. Occasional. Found in northern North America and Europe. Season August-October. Not edible. Comment My specimens are rather small compared with the specimens reported by Smith.
